Dead 300V Power Supply

Not too long ago, I inherited a multimeter from my father-in-law.  This was because he hadn't used it in years and also as payment for fixing his desktop computer by replacing the power supply.  I can't take full credit for the repair, because I got the new power supply from a family friend.  Installing it was easy, but getting parts can be the challenge.  As I have come to learn at my job.

Not being one to throw something away without it completely served its purpose, I took the dead power supply home with the intention to take it apart and figure out what makes it tick.

I'm like Sylar, only really lazy.

This dead device sat in a bag and was moved around a few times up until tonight, when I finally pulled it out, got a screwdriver, and sized it up.

First and foremost, there was a LOT of dust.  Like a dust bunny warren amount of dust.  Aside from that respitory hazard, I couldn't tell what was fried and what needed replacing.

Off to Eco Station!

The Beginning - Half a Baby Monitor System

There comes a point in everyone's life where they wonder why they have so much stuff. This is usually when they move. For the second time. In a year. Like my family did. I must admit that I moved quite a bit growing up as an army brat, but we had movers and packers. All we did was show up. Sometimes not even that! Then there were the numerous times I moved while on my mission, but transfers were much different than moving. You had two suitcases, and that's what your life was for two years. I still had messes, and whenever I lost something my companion told me to look at least three layers down on my desk. He was usually right too.

Now things have changed. Having a wife and two girls, all sorts of junk and stuff accumulates, and in the oddest places. But I'm going to try to tackle the more obvious things first, and then move from there.

Here we have exhibit number one.

Reasons I can think of hanging onto this:
- Still functional
- It can be used in a science experiment, or at least donated to the Electrical Engineering project lab
- It could be hacked to tune into locally broadcast RF signals
- I'm too lazy to take it to the Eco Station

Reasons to get rid of this:
- Lost the transmitter
- Apartment is laid out such that we can hear our daughter crying from anywhere in the apartment, including the balcony
- The only time when it would be slightly useful would be while doing laundry, but the transmitter may not work through three floors of concrete, and therefore defeats the purpose
- It's ugly and taking up space

Looks like this little guy is going to be taking a trip to the Eco Station since my current employ is located very close to the Southside location. That and my boss does a run every now and again to dump batteries and the like.

Final Verdict: TOSS
